If scores on creativity tests are trending downward among school-age kids, I don't know why we aren't pointing the finger at a likely culprit: Ritlan and other drugs which are known to increase focus and reduce creativity. The timing lines up, since the article indicates scores started to decline in the 90s--right when Ritalin started going mainstream.

That's an interesting idea on Ritalin, but remember that correlation =/= causation. There are a lot of things that occurred in the '90s: obesity numbers started to climb, email/online communities took hold, the Dow Jones Index started a steady climb, elimination of recess and gym in many schools...and so on. Some might be linked, some might be causal, some might simply have happened at the same time.

Also, I know Ritalin is designed to increase focus, but I'm not aware of any studies that show it reduces creativity. The Newsweek article was very clear that focus is actually a very strong component of creativity (the example of the musicians who were able to "shut down" part of their brain to dedicate thought to assembling musical notes, for example).

I do think that it would be interesting to see if the data support your point about Ritalin.

I think it would be extremely hard to pin blame on any one thing. Instead of looking for who to blame maybe we could just look for solutions. If nothing else the cover of the Newsweek magazine is pretty creative.
